Vancouver Marches Against Mass Incarceration
written by Press Release

ACTION AGAINST MASS INCARCERATION!
by VANDU
Friends and allies of VANDU are invited to join us for public education and a March against Mass Incarceration and the "Ominous" Crime Bill.

The Harper government is poised to pass its Omnibus Crime Bill which will lead to a large increase in incarceration in Canada of poor people, drug users, Aboriginal people, and immigrants - groups already massively over-represented in Canadian prisons.

Meanwhile the BC Liberals (with barely a peep of opposition from the NDP) are building a new $90 million privatized jail in Surrey so that the province can lock up more people, for longer for petty and procedural 'crimes', crimes of poverty and 'drug offenses.'

And the rogue Vancouver Police Department continue to persecute our community with tickets for vending and jaywalking, small time possession of illicit drugs, and warrants for procedural crimes like failing to appear at a court date for a minor offense.

March against mass incarceration
Tuesday Oct 11, 1pm
Gather at Library Square

Our Demands:

- Junk the Omnibus Crime Bill!

- Stop the $90 million, 216 cell privatized remand centre in Surrey!

- Vancouver City Council - Direct police not to enforce oppressive, expensive and unfair legislation!

- Social and Economic Justice, not Mass Incarceration!

WHEN? Tuesday, October 11, 1pm

WHERE? Gather at Library Square for a short program and public information leafleting, then a march finishing at VANDU.
