Welcome to GR, etc. Earlier this month, the Obama administration proved again it could, when many doubted, muster its famous "Can Do!" attitude and further the environmental outrages of the Bush administration. On August 5th, Mr. Obama topped W. and allowed Shell Oil permists to commence planned deep water exploration in the far North.

The new oil boom will begin, if Obama gets his way, in the Beaufort Sea, and is certain to trigger a larger rush to drill across the Arctic Ocean.

Not two years since the Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf of Mexico, the potential environmental destruction of a similar disaster in the Arctic has barely registered in the corporate media in the United States. And in Canada, where Arctic sovereignty is ever a motherhood issue, Ottawa has not deigned make a peep. Fact is, big oil interests in Canada, foreign-owned for the most part, are too champing to get their drill bits into the Beaufort, and have been busily beavering away to make sure no pesky natives, (animal or human) get in the way.

And; where can you go to escape the militarisation of North American society? Here in Victoria, a designated "military town" thanks to the CFB Esquimalt naval base, home port to Canada's Maritime Forces Pacific and Joint Task Force Pacific Headquarters, the military influence is palpable, with local politicos and business organizations always eager to be perceived as supportive, and numerous visits of foreign navies adding to the "men in uniform" seen about the city.

But, it's not only here; take a drive up the island and you'll soon run into CFB Nanoose, before hitting the Comox air base. Or, just take a look offshore from any beach on the island; on any given day you're likely to see warships from the Canadian and other navies out in the straits, accompanied by fighters and/or helicopters. Together, it makes for a very martial setting, one that may make you think we're at war with the world.

And that's just in Canada; in the United States, where our good neighbour and ally really is at war with the world, the situation is more extreme.
