Wild Coast Eco Defense
by Zoe Blunt l Wild Coast
Dear people; the plan to build hundreds of vacation homes on Juan de Fuca Park is moving forward like an angry zombie. Fortunately, our action teams are preparing to deal with the undead invasion.
In the past six months, at least 150 people have scouted and mapped the properties adjacent to the Juan de Fuca Marine trail.
Over 1000 have participated in action training and strategy workshops on the coast in recent years. We don't expect anything to happen yet, but scouts are in the woods all the time now keeping an eye out.
We're recruiting. This coming long weekend, July 30-August 1, Wild Coast is hosting skill-shares, discussions, and workshops on forest action, legal rights, ecosystem mapping, and more.
The location is a large cabin on old-growth acreage on the scenic San Juan River, Port Renfrew. Carpools are leaving Victoria on Saturday morning and returning on Monday, but other options may be available. Camping is in the forest or in the yard. The wildlife is amazing -- it's common to see elk, otters, mink, eagles, and seals on this river. The beach is nearby and canoes are there for paddling. Please RSVP.
The forecast for August, September and October is peaceful, creative action to protect our forestlands. We're going to shut down this
massive vacation-home complex at Juan de Fuca Provincial Park before it starts.
I'm betting grassroots action will succeed where government has failed. The province isn't going to protect the forest, and it seems
our regional representatives can't take action to stop urban sprawl, even if they want to. But we can, and we will.
Forest Action Network plans to challenge this resort plan if it's approved. We need your support! Please make a contribution to the Wild
Coast Defense Fund this week. The fund stands now at $1,925 and the goal is to raise $10,000 by October.
