Stray poodle skydives to better life
Injured 'May' rescued by eagle-eyed nursing home staff after falling from bird's clutches
By Gerry Bellett, Vancouver Sun May 17, 2011
She's a vagabond toy poodle, named May by SPCA staff because earlier
this month she fell out of the sky and landed in the grounds of
Sechelt's Shorncliffe Nursing Home.
How she came to be flying over the nursing home is explained by the
deep talon marks in her back and sides, showing she was probably the
unwilling passenger of a hungry eagle that had picked her up but
eventually found her 18 pounds too heavy to hold on to.
It
is beautiful that readers have donated $4,000 so the poodle can have
dental work. It’s amazing how generous and caring people can be.
I
work at the First United Church, a refuge for literally hundreds of
homeless people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
We opened a dental
clinic staffed by volunteer dentists one day a week but cannot keep it
open each week because dental supplies are too expensive. Many people –
our own brothers and sisters right here in Vancouver -- cannot eat well
because of horrible dental problems neglected for years.
If
readers would collectively donate even $1,000, we could keep that
clinic open and continue to help our neighbours who are in desperate
need. Any readers who would like to help can do so through www.firstunited.ca or by calling us at (604) 681-8365

Poodle dropped from the sky to get $4,000 in dental work
By Gerry Bellett, Vancouver Sun May 19, 2011
May, the toy poodle who fell from the sky, is getting her teeth fixed thanks to the generosity of readers.
Earlier this week, The Vancouver Sun ran a story about May, who was
discovered on the grounds of a Sechelt nursing home badly injured after
falling from the talons of an eagle carrying her away.
The Sunshine Coast SPCA treated her broken ribs, lacerated back and
ingrown nails at a cost of some thousands of dollars but May -who
appears to have been a stray for a long time -needed almost $4,000 in
dental work to fix her badly decayed teeth.
"The BC SPCA has been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support for
May. We were so very moved by the compassion and generosity of the
people who contacted us," the SPCA's Lorie Chortyk said Wednesday.
"Thankfully, we've received enough donations to cover May's surgeries
and she is at the veterinary hospital today for the first of her dental
surgeries," Chortyk said.
