Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Jon Elmer, Ingmar Lee, Janine Bandcroft May 30, 2011

This Week on Gorilla Radio
by C. L. Cook
This week: Jon Elmer is a Canadian freelance journalist, who has lived in and reported from Occupied Palestine for the better part of the last decade. Jon's articles have appeared at the InterPress Service, al Jazeera, and other international news services, as well as at his own site, JonElmer.com. Jon Elmer from Bethlehem in the first half.

Ingmar Lee is a long-time local activist, who has spent the better part of the last decade and a half trying to protect British Columbia's forests and environment from the rapacious and ongoing assault of fortune seekers both foreign and domestic who see nothing but personal profit when regarding our magnificent shared natural heritage. Ingmar Lee and holding the line in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with what's going on on our streets and beyond. But first, Jon Elmer and the Arab Spring's uncertain harvest.

The Arab Spring, that eruption of protest both legitimate and manipulated, across North Africa and throughout much of the Arab world now entering its fifth month is yet to produce a Summer, where the fruits of the efforts and sacrifices made to remove the despots ripen for harvest. In Tunisia and Egypt, where the sparks of revolution first caught fire, while the figure heads of the military regimes behind the throne have rolled, the people remain under the boot of the hated oligarchy. In Yemen meanwhile, peaceful citizen demonstrations are coming under fire, with scores killed, and unknown numbers more wounded. It all promises for an extremely hot season for the entire region.

And; over the weekend hundreds of thousands of citizens from countries across Europe came into the streets and squares of some of the continent's capitals, and satellite cities to protest relentless cuts to social services and pensions to shore up a financial system made insolvent by stock speculators and assorted Ponzi schemers. It's small surprise, after decades of economic inequity and crony capitalist abuses of the democractic process, this moment has arrived, and the watchword for Canadians now is: "Lookout!"

Small thanks to Stephen Harper's government, Canada was spared some of the worst of the meltdown of the world economy due to banking regulations that stayed in place, despite Harper's best efforts to remove them, but we are not out of the woods. For years, economic interests, often trans-national in nature, have had their way with our politicians, and our laws are beginnning to reflect that.
