Shutting Down the Raven Coal Mine
written by Press Release

Help Shut Down the Raven Coal Mine
by Wilderness Committee
The 40 day public comment period for the Raven Coal Mine environmental assessment process has started. We have until June 27th to demonstrate the resounding public opposition to this destructive project that will add millions of tones carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, pollute drinking water and salmon streams, and jeopardize the Fanny Bay Oyster industry.

We need your help to spread the word, and to get people to participate in the process. The environmental assessment is a far from perfect process, but it is a great tool for magnifying people's voices and highlighting concerns.

There are two main ways you can help us in our efforts:

Firstly, submit a formal comment as an organization or group. Sample letters and issues of concern can be found at http://wildernesscommittee.org/takeaction/say_no_the_raven_coal_mine

Secondly, and most importantly, please help get people to write letters and attend the public meetings on May 30 (Courtenay), June 2 (Port Alberni) and June 3 (Union Bay).

A sample email that you can circulate to your lists is included below:

Join the Convoy and help stop Raven Coal

The Raven Coal Mine has entered the public comment period for the environmental assessment process. A key part of this process is town hall meetings where the public has a chance to tell the government what we think about the project.

We need you and your voice! We need to fill the rooms, and clearly demonstrate our opposition to this dirty project that will impact clean water, salmon runs, and add million of tonnes of climate change causing green house gases.

There are three public meetings, each starting at 6:00 pm

Monday, May 30 - Courtenay - Florence Filberg Centre
Thursday, June 2 - Port Alberni - Port Alberni Athletic Hall
Friday, June 3 - Union Bay - Union Bay Hall

Please consider attending and sending this notice to any lists you have access to.

Wilderness Committee is organizing carpooling from Victoria and Tofino, with pick ups in Naniamo (for ferry goers from
Vancouver too), and Qualicum. Please complete this form if you would like to be included in the convoy, or have any additional transportation needs getting to and from the meetings.

Please also write a comment about the project, which you can do by using this easy letter-writing tool.

Remember, history is made by those who show up and raise their voice. Your participation is vital in our ongoing work to protect Vancouver Island's future.

In Solidarity,
