 April 15, 2011 - The murder of human rights activist, Vittorio Arrigoni, is a tragedy for his family, for those of us who knew him, and for the Palestinians who loved and admired him.
The Steering Committee of Freedom Flotilla 2 and the Canadian Boat to Gaza condemn this senseless murder and the people who are behind it. They took the life of one of the most passionate supporters of justice for Palestine.
This murder is damaging to the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice as well as our work in support of that struggle.
In his honour, we are naming our next voyage, FREEDOM FLOTILLA - STAY HUMAN.
Nothing that we write can capture the man who was so full
of the joy of life, a man with the pipe in his mouth and the captain's
hat always tilted at an angle on his head. The man with the big smile
and gentle nature, someone who used his physical strength to hold small
children in his arms, sometimes several at a time. His laughter and his
last comments every time we saw him will ring in all of our ears as we
board the boats to return to Gaza at the end of May.
"Stay Human," he would say, then grin and clench his pipe in his teeth.
Vittorio had sailed with us on the first small boat to enter Gaza in the summer of 2008, one of 44 activists sailing to protest the illegal blockade imposed by Israel against the 1.5 million Palestinians living in Gaza. We will do our best, Vik, to carry on the work you have done. The flotilla will return to Gaza in your honour.

Le meurtre du militant des droits humains, Vittorio Arrigoni, est une tragédie pour sa famille, pour ceux d'entre nous qui le connaissions et pour les Palestiniens qui l'aimaient et l'admiraient. Le Comité de pilotage de la Flottille de la Liberté 2 et le Bateau canadien pour Gaza condamnent ce meurtre insensé et les gens qui l'ont commandité. Il ont volé la vie de l'un des défenseurs les plus passionnés de la justice pour la Palestine. Ce meurtre porte tort à la lutte des Palestiniens pour la liberté et la justice tout comme à notre travail de solidarité avec ce combat.
En son honneur, nous nommerons notre prochain voyage Flottille de la Liberté-Restons humains.
Rien de ce que nous écrivons ne peut montrer l'homme qui était si plein de vie, un homme la pipe à la bouche et une casquette de marin de guingois sur la tête. L'homme au grand sourire et au caractère doux, qui utilisait sa force physique pour tenir dans ses bras les petits enfants, plusieurs à la fois parfois. Son rire et ses derniers mots à chaque fois que nous le voyions résonneront à nos oreilles quand nous embarquerons sur les bateaux pour repartir à Gaza à la fin du mois de mai.
Il dirait « Restons humains » et puis il sourirait et serrerait les dents sur sa pipe.
Vittorio était des nôtres dans le premier petit bateau qui est entré à Gaza à l'été 2008, l'un des 44 militants à avoir pris la mer pour protester contre le blocus illégal imposé par Israël aux 1.5 million de Palestiniens qui vivent à Gaza. Nous allons faire de notre mieux, Vik, pour continuer ton ouvre. La flottille retournera à Gaza en ton honneur.
