Logging Road Permit Issued for Flores Island
by The Wilderness Committee
The BC government has issued a road building permit for a
pristine ancient forested watershed on Flores Island, in the heart of
Clayoquot Sound. The logging road permit was issued to Iisaak
Forest Resources on Friday, April 1. Iisaak is owned by the five First
Nations whose territories encompass in and around Clayoquot
Sound.
Flores Island is mostly covered in ancient temperate rainforest
that was supposed to have been put off-limits to logging in the
historic
1999
Memorandum of Understanding agreement (MOU) between Iisaak and
major environmental groups, including the Wilderness Committee. This
agreement ended the "war in the woods," with its decade-long
protests and market campaigns.
Now Iisaak has broken that MOU
agreement.
I know many of you have
written letters to the BC government demanding that road or
cutting permits not be issued and we are all very disappointed that
the road building permit has been issued. But now I need to ask you to
take the next step -- it's time to get down to saving Clayoquot
Sound!

presented by Dan Lewis & Bonny Glambeck of Friends of Clayoquot
Sound
this Friday, April 8 at 7:30 pm at UBC Robson Square Theatre,
at Robson and Howe.

We
also need to keep those letters coming! To defuse this escalating
conflict, we need the BC government to step up to the plate in
Clayoquot Sound by stepping in now with community funding for
conservation solutions. If governments partner with First Nations and
environmental groups in creating a conservation solution, there is a
real opportunity to protect the ancient forests of Clayoquot Sound
while ensuring the long-term well being of local First Nation
communities.
Ask her to rescind the Flores Island logging road permit and
to provide community funding to enable solutions for the protection of
Clayoquot Sound's intact valleys. Please don't delay - do it
today!
