This week: Sandra Finley is a long-time activist, writer, and researcher. She is
the former leader of the Green Party of Saskatchewan, who has now tossed
her hat into the federal arena as the federal Green Party candidate for
her Saskatoon-Humbolt riding.
Derrick O'Keefe is a Vancouver-based writer, teacher, and social
activist. He is a co-chair of both the Vancouver chapter of the
StopWar.ca coalition, and with the Canadian Peace Alliance. Derrick is
also the co-author, with Malalai Joya, of the Afghani MP's political
memoir, 'A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan
Who Dared to Raise Her Voice.' He's currently accompanying Malalai Joya
on the western swing of her American speaking tour.
Derrick O'Keefe and finding Canada's voice for peace in the second half.
And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine
Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us news from
the city's streets and beyond.
As Canada flies headlong into the election campaign for the 41st House of Parliament already there are some worrying signs. As with the last election, Stephen Harper's Tories and their colleagues in the House have agreed to exclude Green Party leader, Elizabeth May from the biggest single televised debate. While Harper and the rest claim the decision to exclude the upstart Greens was made by the coalition of broadcasters covering the four party face-off, and so out of their hands, it does point up yet again Canada's growing democracy deficit.
You may r ecall the same scenario being reversed before the last election by a hue and and cry from the public, who, contrary to the prime minister, maintain still an enthusiasm for both the principle of democracy, and the electoral process necessary for its continuance. And it's not as though green issues are irrelevant, as ecological disaster ridden 2010 seems now poised to be eclipsed by our young new year.

And; shortly before the 40th session of the House ended with a non-confidence ouster of the Harper minority for contempt of Parliament, all parties agreed to support military intervention in Libya. Canada has been mired in a broadly unpopular foreign military adventure in Afghanistan for more than a decade now, but neither the Afghani, and now Libyan "missions," nor the quickening militarization of the country have registered on the elections home front.
Over the cour se of Stephen Harper's five years in Ottawa, and the preceding five years under the Liberals, Canada has morphed into an avid warfighting nation, replete with burgeoning military budget, now exceeding 21 billion dollars annually, and yet there is next to no coverage, let along debate about this startling turnaround among those hoping to lead the nation.
