Help Protect Farm Land, Join the Co-op
by Co-op Action Network
Another piece of rural land is being threatened, this time by Peninsula Co-op. In September 2010 Peninsula Co-op submitted an application to rezone rural land and build a big box grocery store on prime farmland well outside of designated commercial and urban boundaries (learn more here).
Co-op Action Network is a group of Peninsula Co-op Members who have come together to save this land from development and make environmental responsibility a foundation of Co-op policies. We would like to see the Co-op become more innovative, provides better returns to its members with new services, democratic accountability, more community investment, and broad support for local farms.
Earlier this year an Arbitrator concluded that the 2009 Board of Directors' election for Peninsula Co-op was conducted in "bad faith",
in a manner that was "oppressive" and he found significant election irregularities.
Because of this, 6 of 9 seats on the Board of Directors are up for election May 25th to June 8th (learn more here).
Our goal is to elect a new board of directors who will protect farmland, make the Co-op more accountable to its members, increase
donations to community groups, and support for local food and farms. If you feel as we do, that Peninsula Co-op is an asset to our
community and that it should be doing more to respond to the changing needs of its members, then we would appreciate your support in electing a new Board of Directors.
If you're already a member of Peninsula Co-op, join others in pledging to sign up 5 new members by March 31st. If you are not
currently a member, it's easy to sign up, and anyone who becomes a member before March 31st is eligible to vote (learn more here)
Thank you for your time and feel free to visit our website at www.coopactionnetwork.ca. We believe that the Co-op presents a
unique opportunity to work together and create a better Southern Vancouver Island.
