An Open Letter to Jack Layton,
Leader of the New Democratic Party
I'd like to thank you, Jack for standing by your principles, and trusting
Canadians will do the same. Five years of Mr. Harper's minority rule, and his
party's dismantling by pieces of Canada's parliamentary democracy, while
promoting Republican values and policies that have proved disastrous in the
south, threaten now to finish the country.
Mr. Harper's decision to attack your recent health challenges reveals his
lack of personal integrity, and questionable political judgment. You're right;
Canada's health care system is in dire need of attention, and Canadians have not
forgotten what it once was, and should again be.
He would starve the hungry, deny the homeless shelter, and leave the
naked unclothed. He would imprison the poor for the profit of the rich, and take
the taxes demanded of the workers to further fill the pockets of war profiteers.
Mr. Harper hates the Canada you and I grew up in; hates its social conscience
and determination to create a just and good society.
I remember the promise that was our future, and jet fighters and for profit
Supermax prisons was not a part of it; neither were police riots,
nor billion dollar displays of contempt for democracy.
I remember public service, and honest optimism, and I reject the cynicism of
Mr. Harper and his fellow neo-economists, who with their moral compasses fixed
immovably on the bottom line reject the humane, favouring instead base
self-interest.
Good luck, Jack
Sincerely,
Chris Cook
