Stupid Sprawl and the
Juan de Fuca Resort Plan
by Zoe Blunt
He's back AGAIN! Ender Ilkay and his controversial Marine Trail Resort plan would put hundreds of cabins and a huge resort on top of the Juan de Fuca trail. The proposal goes to the local land use committee on Tuesday, February 15, 7 pm at Sooke Council Chambers, 2225 Otter Point Rd.
The revised plan (same as the previous plan) envisions a sprawling tourist resort 100 meters from the Juan de Fuca trail. Marine Trail
Resort Inc. would build lodges, rec buildings, and 263 privately-owned cabins, each with its own septic field in an area that gets a meter of rain per month in the winter. This is clearly not a "compromise," no matter what they call it.
It would affect 17 kilomters of the trail, and dozens of cabins would be constructed only meters outside the park boundary.
It looks like the committee is inclined to ACCEPT this ridiculous plan. CRD planning staff are recommending it. Just about everyone else
is calling for them to REJECT it.
We're lining up speakers and persuasive arguments against the proposal, focusing on potential harm to the Juan de Fuca park,
tourism, emergency services, indigenous rights, forests, and wildlife. Please attend the meeting Tuesday night, and let us know if you'd like to address the committee.
Even better, take two minutes to write a brief letter to the Vancouver Sun and the Victoria Times Colonist about this proposal. Opinion
letters have a big impact on the readers and on the issue - let's use them!
