Martin of the 3rd Battalion Royal 22e Regiment died when an improvised explosive device detonated near a road building project.
Martin becomes the 158th Canadian known killed in Afghanistan since the invasion of 2001. Two aid workers, a journalist, and Canadian diplomat have also died there.
Cpl. Martin, a St-Cyrill-de-Wendover, Quebec native was based in Valcartier, Que., and would have celebrated his 25th birthday today.
Canadian Forces spokesperson, Brigadier General Dean Milner expressed condolences to Martin's family, saying;
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the
fallen soldier during this difficult time. We will not
forget the sacrifice of this soldier as we continue to bring security
and hope to the people of Kandahar province."
Striking a political note, Canadian defense minister, Peter MacKay remarked in a statement Sunday;
"The UN-sanctioned, NATO-led mission to Afghanistan remains a
challenging one, but the Canadian Forces continues to serve and
sacrifice, alongside our international partners, in order to help the
Afghan people achieve security and stability following decades of
conflict."
The prime minister too expressed sorrow, saying;
"Cpl. Martin was a brave Canadian who made the ultimate sacrifice
while proudly serving his country," he said. "Thanks to Canadian Forces
members like him, we continue to make real progress in Afghanistan,
rebuilding the country and contributing to the peace and security of its
people."
