Development Threatens Juan de Fuca Trail
written by Press Release
Public Consultation: Resort Development
on Juan de Fuca Trail
by WildCoast.ca
Info session, panel discussion, and public consultation about a new proposal to build a sprawling resort on former forestlands along the Juan de Fuca trail, west of China Beach. Everyone welcome!

We're asking people to get their concerns on the public record before this process goes any further. The regional government has not consulted sufficiently with the community on these urgent matters affecting the public interest. If they won't do a proper consultation, we will!

The situation: West Vancouver developer Ender Ilkay plans to build 279 cabins, a lodge, resort facilities, and caretaker cottages alongside 7 kilometers of the Juan de Fuca Marine Park, between China Beach and Sombrio Beach.

Cabins and roads would encroach within 100 meters of the wilderness trail. If built, the resort will add to "tourism sprawl," increase demands for roads, increase greenhouse gases, drive out wildlife, and ruin the wilderness experience of the Juan de Fuca trail. These forestlands will be paved over forever if we don't act.

Please join us THURSDAY December 2, BCGEU Hall, 2994 Douglas St.
6 pm - Doors open, volunteers welcome for set up
6:30 pm - Wild Coast 2011 Calendar launch: view the photos, meet the photographers
7 pm - Panel discussion chaired by David Anderson, former Environment Minister

Sponsored by Jordan River Steering Committee, Dogwood Initiative, and Forest Action Network.
