Canada is known worldwide for its generosity and fair-mindedness, (that is, outside those countries where The New Canadian Government of Stephen Harper practices its new-found military muscularity). But in countries whose only knowledge of Canada is gleaned from the behaviour of corporations flying the Maple Leaf it's a different story. Among those industries who despoil the people and landscapes of foreign nations for the profit of their amoral boards of directors and uncaring investors, mining stands out as a runaway leader in depravity and malfeasance; and, in no other area of the world is the outrage against nature and humanity more keenly felt than in Africa.
Congo Rising is an organization that [quote] "...helps bring the voices of Congolese women to Canadians through outreach activities like speaking tours, documentary film and participatory action research..." and is "...proud of [their] partnership with SFVS (Synergie des femmes pour les victimes des violences sexuelles), that provides direct support to thousands of survivors of sexual violence." [unquote].
They are particularly concerned with the negative effects foreign business activities are having on the Democratic Republic of Congo, and most especially on the women of that nation.

And; cholera is taking hold now among the sheet and shanty towns of Haiti. Nearing a year since the devastating January earthquake there, thousands are still without proper shelter and services. Last week, frustrated and frightened Haitians took to the streets, demanding an end to the United Nations occupation of the country, and redress for the International Community's unilateral usurpation of the civil functions of their country to disastrous effect.
