This Week on GR
by C. L. Cook
This past week, Israel went ahead with its declared end to the official
ban on settlement building by Jews in the West Bank, guaranteeing, as
Sharon's calculated trespass did in 2000, years more of death and
enmity on both sides of the Palestine-Israel divide.
Jon Elmer is a Canadian photo-journalist who has lived in, and reported
from Palestine for more than a decade. He is currently living in
Bethlehem, Palestine, reporting on the West Bank for the Inter Press
Service and Al Jazeera among others. Jon Elmer in the first half.
The Israeli Defense Forces attack that resulted in the murder of nine of the Mavi Marmara's roughly
seven hundred peace activist passengers as they sailed with humanitarian
aid for the Gaza Strip has subsequently been deemed by a United
Nations investigation into the events of May 31st to have broken many
international laws, not least being the execution-style murders of at
least four of the nine killed that night.
Ken
O'Keefe on the continued Gaza Flotilla campaigns to break the siege on
the benighted population there, and bearing witness to the crimes of
Israel in the second half.
And, Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine
Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz from
Victoria's street community and beyond. But first, Jon Elmer live from
Bethlehem.

Ten years after Israel's then-defense minister and aspirant prime minister, Ariel Sharon storm Jerusalem's al-Asqa mosque with a thousand of his closest friends, touching off the beginning of the so-named 'Second Intifada' what has changed? While the grandstand political move to march into the mosque grounds is widely believed to have put Sharon into the leadership seat, the subsequent violence and ill-will this stunt created persists a decade later, even as the former prime minister languishes still in a stroke-induced coma.

And, last week, international peace activist and founder of Aloha Palestine, Ken O'Keefe was in Victoria promoting his organization, and recounting his experiences aboard the ill-fated Mavi Marmara, the Turkish flagged ship attacked May 31st of this year by the Israeli military. That attack resulted in the murder of nine of the Mavi's roughly seven hundred peace activist passengers as they sailed with humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip. Israel has subsequently been deemed by a United Nations investigation into the events of May 31st to have broken many international laws, not least being the execution-style murders of at least four of the nine killed that night.
