Former
U.S. marine and now international peace activist Ken O’Keefe renounced
his US citizenship after serving in the first Gulf War.
On May 31, 2010 he was on board the Turkish ship the Mavi Marmara
as part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla aiming to break the illegal Israeli
blockade of Gaza. While the Mavi Marmara was on the high seas, Israeli commandos stormed it.
O’Keefe was one of several activists who risked their lives and
disarmed some of the Israeli raiders. Israeli forces killed nine
activists in the process of seizing the ship.

The UN Human
Rights Commission concluded that the Israeli military’s attack on the
Mavi Marmara “was clearly unlawful.” It has ruled that “a series of
violations of international law, including international humanitarian
and human rights law, were committed by the Israeli forces during the
interception of the flotilla.”
For his resistance to this illegal attack, Ken O’Keefe was detained in Israel and severely beaten by the Israeli military.
Hear
Ken O’Keefe describe his experience on the Mavi Marmara, the ordeal of
his detention and his plans to continue the campaign to free Gaza and
help the Palestinians, including a new flotilla.
A video presentation will accompany his talk.
