There are many reasons people emigrate, relocate, or seek asylum in other countries. It is never an easy decision to make; leaving ones home, friends, family, and career to cross the world, and in many cases culture, is more than most of us are willing to risk, but as the past week's headlines in Victoria attest: These are desperate times for millions around the world, and for many of these desperate measures are required.

For we here in the industrial North, the immigrant's path seems a one way street; the tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to be free, the wretched refuse of distant teeming shores landing at our "golden door" seeking refuge; but it is not always the case.

And; the Thai-flagged ship MV Sun Sea landed in Victoria over the weekend. The Sun Sea's cargo of 490 Tamil asylum seekers has set off again the immigration debate in Canada, with some predictable predictions of doom should this country, Canada receive the wretched refuse of another teeming shore, or do as many in the government of the day insist, and send these homeless and tempest-tost back whence they came.
