Understanding the EPA Toxicity Test
written by Press Release
Understanding The EPA Toxicity Tests
by Project Gulf Impact
In another great interview by Project Gulf Impact, Dr. Chris Pincetich, PhD, Marine Bioligist, Toxicologist, of Turtle Island Restoration Network, talks about the dispersant use, where it’s being used (might surprise you) and how the EPA studies are set up to avoid giving you the real toxicity data on the dispersants.

You ask me if Corexit is getting on land? I’m telling you it’s getting SPRAYED ON LAND!

In one test… the pesticides that killed no fish at 96 hours (the EPA deadline), had killed 90% of those fish two weeks later. If that organism in that test beaker is paralyzed or incapacitated and the heart rate is half its normal rate, it is still counted as alive/viable for test purposes. The heartbeat of one beat per minute is “alive” and the score will be “no effect” (because the death occurred after the 96 hour test cut off).

The dispersant + oil will kill all larval organisms. Understanding what’s behind these these tests is part of understanding how toxic the chemicals are… and that’s a big question right now
