Here are some alternative perspectives on what
happened at the G20 protests in Toronto
by Paul Manley
Hi All;  Please feel free to circulate and post.

First my interview with a photo journalist who followed the black block for 1.5 hours and 24 blocks without any police interference until they reached the official designated protest site, got out of their black clothes, dispersed through the crowd and left the scene. Then the police brutally attacked peaceful protesters in the designated protest zone with batons and pepper spray.

How respectful - they waited until the anthem was over and then charged!

Describes her arrest and detainment at Toronto Film Studio makeshift prison including strip searches and threats or rape.

During the 12 days I was in Toronto I witnessed the police overreact and provoke innocent people. The first person I videotaped being arrested was charged and detained for 3 hours on Monday June 21 for possession of break and enter tools - the break and enter tool was the key to her workplace! The police didn't listen to her and only released her after finally calling her employer. She asked me not to post the video.

I have lots of footage of police searching people on the street and as they try to enter parks in the vicinity of protests. I have footage of journalists and innocent bystanders being attacked and I have footage of the Council of Canadians and the canoe flotilla as they tried to paddle to Deerhurst resort. We had five police boats, two helicopters and RCMP zodiacs at ready to stop four canoes! Security indeed!

I also have great footage of events and speakers at the Peoples Summit Launch and the Shout Out for Global Justice and interviews with people on the streets explaining why they and all of us should be opposed to the agenda of the G20. I will be posting lots of this content on the Canadians Nanaimo youtube site as well as packaging programming for the Smart Change Cable Access Coalition project.

Happy to be Home

Hi Paul--
Thanks for putting this up - I look forward to seeing your videos. I was also thankful for your advice during your People's Summit workshop. I've compiled more videos, photos, and articles here: http://maggieknight.wordpress....y-to-date/
(This comes from the luxury of not having been in Toronto during all the craziness.)
Cheers,
Maggie

One note. I didn't hear mentioned.

As the Bloc was walking down College smashing the CIBC, the HQ for Toronto Police was a half a block down the street. They continued to cause damage and walked right by the HQ with around 100 officers in full riot gear at the HQ and they didn't do anything...

It doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me.

Then I see something like this at :45 seconds in

It really bothers me that some seem to be blaming other protesters for the police's actions rather than the police themselves. It reminds me of when people make excuses and blame the victim for domestic abuse. The police protect the upper class, their property, and business interests. Why is that surprising to anyone? They do it every day. Sometimes when people are bullied, they stand up and fight back while the still can.

[The blame-shift narrative is indeed not new, and is used in places like Israel to ingenuously deflect the issue. That said; I think it is really time for those who call themselves the Blck Bloc, and for those who support their tactics, to take a long look at just what they're achieving. - ed.]

what a load of shit. If anything, the police reaction was minimal, and you should consider yourself lucky. Trying to say the police baited a bunch of lunatics to light their police cars on fire is ridiculous. Nice try.

["..you should consider yourself lucky..." The Charter of Rights and Freedoms prefers Canadian citizens not count on "luck", that is, if the police holding the weapon decides to use it or not. If you don't like democracy, why don't you move to North Korea, or Israel? - ed.]

First, thank-you Paul, I am very grateful for your posting of your video-supported opinions. We need more of this on all news topics, not just the overtly sensational ones. ( http://pressfortruth.ca is just the beginning )

Second, these are mine: http://www.facebook.com/notes.php?id=513501731

Third, if you can get a copy, you would enjoy reading Little Brother by Cory Doctorow
