Dziekanski Report Release Tomorrow
written by Press Release
BCCLA to hold press conference
to respond to Dziekanski report
by B.C. Civil Liberties Association
On Friday, June 18, 2010, the Ministry of the Attorney General will release the final report into the death of Robert Dziekanski at Vancouver International Airport. Following the release, the B.C. Civil Liberties Association will respond to the report at a press conference.

The report is the second and final report of two inquiries and will wrap up two years of work conducted by the Braidwood commission. The purpose of the report is to provide the Dziekanski family and the public with a complete record of the circumstances of Mr. Robert Dziekanski’s death and to make recommendations the Commissioner of the inquiry considers necessary and appropriate.

The first report, which was released a year ago, focused on the appropriate use of Tasers and other conducted energy weapons by police.

The report made 19 recommendations to the provincial government regarding the appropriate use of Tasers by law enforcement agencies in the province. The report bluntly stated that the provincial government had abdicated its responsibility to establish province-wide standards for the use of tasers. The BCCLA was a participant at both inquiries.

Copies of the Report will be available at 10 a.m. on the Braidwood Commission’s website >>

Mr. Dziekanski was a Polish immigrant who died in the airport's international arrivals lounge after four RCMP officers accosted him. He was tasered five times by one of the officers.
