This Week on GR
by C. L. Cook
This week: Stephen Harper, the twisted progeny of Trickle Down governance theory is
now determined to follow the lead of his Republican brethren in
America and make of this Canada a slave state, replete with corporate
prisons, rolling over the rim with marijuana inmates and three strike,
mandatory minimum sentence losers. One of the more troubling events
evidencing this is the Conservative effort to destroy the prison farm
programs, a signally successful model of rehabilitory incarceration.
And; "Inspired by a passion for justice, a defiant libertarian ethos, a
desire for autonomy, or for purposes of artistic expression." Marian van
der Zon is one of three dedicated pirates who put together the
anthology of tales from across the spectrum of the country's illicit
radio dials, Islands of Resistance: Pirate Radio in Canada. Radio pyrates, snubbing the edicts of broadcasting with
Marian van der Zon in the second half.
And; Victoria Street Newz
publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the
bottom of the hour to preview the newz from our city's streetz you may
or may not hear from the corporate stream in the coming weeks. But
first, Dianne Dowling and saving the nation's prison farms.
Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, www.pacificfreepress.com.
There was a time in this country, Canada not so long ago when we conspired to do something not tried since the days the Indian ruled the land. Within living memory, the society decided it would make Justice, Equality, and Cooperation guiding principles. It was hoped with these cornerstones a truly caring country could flourish, where rather than allowing the poor freeze in the streets, pensions, subsidized housing, and welfare programs would be established; it would be a place believing those who do bad are more than mere trash to be consigned to forgotten heaps, but are human beings capable of both redemption and reintroduction into the nation family.
It was a place of restoration and creation, a place expressing confidence and a determination to optimism. And then came Reagan, and Thatcher, and the worm Mulroney. Since, our civilization has fallen in equal measure to the rise of the philosophy of these three horsemen.
Sadly, despite their personal decline into respective delerium, madness, and venality our greater decline has not ceased. Stephen Harper, the twisted progeny of Trickle Down governance theory is now determinded to follow the lead of his Republican brethren in America and make of this Canada a slave state, replete with corporate prisons, rolling over the rim with marijuana inmates and three strike, mandatory minimum sentence losers.
One of the more troubling events evidencing this is the Conservative effort to destroy the prison farm programs, a signally successful model of rehabilitory incarceration.
Dianne Dowling is with the Save Our Prison Farms coalition, and she's a member of the National Farmers Union. Dianne Dowling in the first half.
And; over the weekend a scurvy-ridden new book, Islands of Resistance: Pirate Radio in Canada launched here in Victoria at Camas Books. Of pirate radio, the resistors say they are: "Inspired by a passion for justice, a defiant libertarian ethos, a desire for autonomy, or for purposes of artistic expression." Marian van der Zon is one of three dedicated pirates who put together the anthology of tales from across the spectrum of the country's illicit radio dials. Radio pyrates, snubbing the edicts of broadcasting with Marian van der Zon in the second half.
