Over the weekend, the Free Gaza Flotilla attempted again to penetrate the illegal blockade of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli military. Several attempts to get aid into Gaza by sea have been made over the last two years, but all were violently intercepted. This time, nine ships began the odyssey, but it seems none have made it through. Victoria-based human rights activist Kevin Neish was on board one of the ships, and we had arranged to discuss events live as they unfold, but as of writing all contact has been lost. Jon Elmer is a Canadian journalist and photo-journalist based in Bethlehem.

Recent events in the Gulf of Mexico point up the increasingly disastrous effects on the environment of industiral society. Today, technology, always thought of as our deliverer from the savage vagaries of nature, has conspired with the latent greed, laziness,  hubris, and stupidity endemic to our species to threaten the continued existence of human civilization on a global scale. Removed largely from the natural world, it is as though those of us living in the post-bucolic world are extra-terrestrials, aliens in a world we can neither feel connected to or understand.
