was killed by a roadside bomb Monday near Kandahar city. (DND)

A Canadian Forces (CF) spokesperson said Blake was killed while returning to base after disposing of another IED in the Panjwai district. He is the first Canadian Navy member killed in Afghanistan, and his death comes on the eve of the much pubicized 100th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Canadian Navy.

Craig Blake was a member of the Fleet Diving Unit Atlantic, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was 37 years of age, and is survived by his wife and two children.

Speaking of Blake, prime minister, Stephen Harper said he joined in grieving for him with the Canadian Forces, saying he was;

"grieving the loss of Petty Officer 2nd Class Craig Blake — killed in active service, hundreds of miles from the sea, while on service to his country in Afghanistan."

Canada has lost 142 soldiers, one sailor, two aid workers, a diplomat, and a journalist, all killed in Afghanistan.
