Canadian Forces (CF) Corporal Darren Fitzpatrick died Saturday at an Edmonton hospital. Fitzpatrick had suffered serious injury in an encounter with an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan earlier this month.  A Forces' spokesperson said Fitzpatrick was wounded during a foot patrol 25 kilometers west of Kandahar City March 6th.

The 21 year-old was on his first mission in Afghanistan.

Canada's Governor General, Michaelle Jean released a statement about Darren Fitzpatrick's death, that in part read:

"On [the] mission in Afghanistan, he was convinced of the crucial importance of humanitarian assistance for the community of Kandahar province, where poverty, insecurity and terrorism are daily realities."

The Prince George B.C. native was evacuated Friday from Lanstuhl Regional Medical Centre in Germany to University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. The CF says Darren Fitzpatrick's family was present at his bedside when he died Saturday.

State media organ, the Canadian Broadcast Corporation reports, the public will be welcome to Corporal Darren James Fitzpatrick's burial Saturday in Edmonton.
