Breaking: Huge 8.8-magnitude quake hits Chile - USGS 27 Feb 2010 A massive magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck near the coast of south-central Chile early on Saturday, shaking buildings and causing blackouts in parts of the capital Santiago, 200 miles away.
 
Soon after, the U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had generated a tsunami that may have been destructive along the Chilean coast near the epicenter. The USGS said the earthquake struck 56 miles northeast of the city of Concepcion at a depth of 34 miles at 3:34 a.m./1:34 EST.

Massive earthquake strikes Chile 27 Feb 2010 A massive earthquake with an initial magnitude of 8.8 has struck central Chile. The quake struck at 0634 GMT about 91km (56 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and 317km south-west of the capital, Santiago. Buildings in Santiago were reported to have shaken for between 10 and 30 seconds, with the loss of electricity and communications. The US issued an initial tsunami warning for Chile, Peru and Ecuador. That was later extended to Colombia, Antarctica, Panama and Costa Rica.

Breaking: Hawaii Warned of Tsunami; U.S. West Coast on Alert 27 Feb 2010 The Pacific area, including Hawaii, is being warned of tsunamis that may generate "widespread damage," and the U.S. and Canadian west coasts and Alaska have been put on a tsunami alert, government forecasters said. Waves caused after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile may reach the coastline of the Hawaiian Islands at 11:19 a.m. Honolulu time (4:19 p.m. eastern time), the National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement.
