Four weeks have passed now since the devastating earthquake that rocked Haiti. The American invasion pretending to be an aid mission is well entrenched, thousands of U.S. and international soldiers have secured the air and seaports, and now have a stranglehold on aid as it arrives. That is; when they allow it to arrive. In the countryside, the people are still dying for lack of basics like potable water, food, and medicines. The corporate and state media brigades that arrived in the days after January 12th have petered out, now only a handful remain to witness the desertion of the Haitian people and with it the last vestige of the ruling western elite's pretense to humanity. As with the phony promised change in America, for Haitians it is the same as it ever was; the people are being ground under foot by want and cruelty, while their deliverance lays behind barbed wire, jealously guarded by beasts in service to insatiable greed.

And; one watershed at a time, Vancouver Island is fast on its way to becoming an environmental wasteland. This time the wreckers have their eye on Shawnigan Lake's watershed, where they plan, what else but suburban sprawl into the already plundered forest lands. Typically, this systemic erasure of wild space is called "development," but there are some telling differences with what's being planned around Shawnigan. Mary Desmond is president of the Shawnigan Lake Watershed Watch Association, and says this fight is about more than losing natural habitat and a rural lifestyle.
