Opportunity in the Recent Supreme Court Decision

Recognizing Opportunity in the Recent Supreme Court Decision
The lesson: Change must and will come from the bottom up
by Mickey Z.
The recent 5-4 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, says Ralph Nader, "shreds the fabric of our already weakened democracy by allowing corporations to more completely dominate our corrupted electoral process. It is outrageous that corporations already attempt to influence or bribe our political candidates through their political action committees (PACs), which solicit employees and shareholders for donations." Says Nader:

"With this decision, corporations can now directly pour vast amounts of corporate money, through independent expenditures, into the electoral swamp already flooded with corporate campaign PAC contribution dollars. Without approval from their shareholders, corporations can reward or intimidate people running for office at the local, state, and national levels."

How This Supreme Court Decision Can Hurt the Environment

Let's select Exxon-Mobil as an example, a company with sales (more than $404 billion) that exceed the gross domestic product of 120 countries. A company that emits 138 million tons of CO2 every year. In other words, a company that figuratively mocks our sincere efforts to lower our individual carbon footprint. Now, imagine this anti-green monolith with Supreme Court-ordained freedom to spend without limit in the name of influencing elections and elected officials.

Our eco-system is bracing for impact...

How This Supreme Court Decision Can Point Us in a Powerful New Direction

Despite the frightening implications of this decision, it has a potential green lining: For all the talk about a two-party system and creating change from within, it has now be made indisputably clear that we in the green movement cannot rely on the power structure to provoke the type of drastic cultural adjustments the planet requires. This realization, perhaps, can free our minds to now move in a new direction—a direction based not on a few crumbs from above but rather, unshakeable solidarity from below.
