The dead are: Sergeant George Miok of Edmonton, aged 28 years; Corporal Zachery McCormack of Edmonton, aged 21; Sergeant Kirk Taylor of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, aged 28; and, Private Garrett William Chidley of Langley, B.C., aged 21.

The four were killed alongside Michelle Lang, a journalist with the Calgary Herald. The Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) is reporting, several other soldiers, and at least one civilian, were also injured in the attack.

Canada's defence minister, Peter MacKay, in a prepared statement released to the press, said of the dead;

"Canadians will always stand proudly behind the brave men and women of the Canadian Forces, and our partners, as they courageously risk their lives every day towards our goal of a stable, strong and peaceful Afghanistan. Their sacrifice inspires those who will follow in our commitment to this mission and for this, the government of Canada and all Canadians will remain forever grateful."
