The Anti-Olympics Festival will begin in Centennial Square with “The Five Ring Circus”. The circus features speakers, games, competitions, food, costumes, street theatre, and giant puppets, including a giant salmon chased by dozens of sea lice.
“The festival encourages creative resistance to environmental destruction, indigenous rights violations, the privatization of public space, the quashing of free speech, cut-backs in social services, and the corporate take-over of our province”, states No2010 spokesperson Danielle Hagel.
The festival will be followed by a “Zombie March”, which will wind through city streets as the torch approaches the legislature.
“The Zombie March commemorates the oppression and brutality of Olympics past”, says No2010 spokesperson Tamara Herman. “It is also a reminder of the sombre reality that so many face today while our governments spend $5 billion on the 2010 circus”.
Hundreds of people are expected to attend the festival and march. No 2010 Victoria is comprised of students, artists, teachers, anti-poverty activists, workers, retirees, and community leaders.
