It's been more than ten years since the 'Crisis at Pacifica,' that nearly dismembered the iconic American alternative broadcast network. The attempt to muscle in from the top down and chunk off for cash prime components of Pacifica failed then, (the most visible emblem of that failure being the creation of Democracy Now!, airing Monday through Friday at noon here at CFUV), but as the man said, "Perpetual vigilance is the price of freedom." Once again, there's a crisis brewing, and it's a crisis that threatens Democracy Now! and the very ideals Pacifica Radio set out to promote so many years ago.

Iain Boal is a historian of the commons, activist, and co-author of the book, 'Afflicted Powers: Capital and Spectacle in a New Age of War.' He has followed the dark lurkings at Pacifica, and recently published an article, 'The New Crisis at Pacifica' on CounterPunch.org. Iain Boal in the first half.

And; while serving as Canada's finance minister in the 1990's, Paul Martin ushered in the Canadian Pension Plan  Investment Board, an arm's length governement body with the power to take Canadians' mandated contributions, and float that money around on the world's stock and bond markets. In their own words, the CPP IB is a: "...professional investment management organization, operating in the private sector world of financial markets, with strong public sector accountability". Erik Andersen is a Gabriola Island-based economist, with a long history in the investment business. He's the current president of Gabriola's Ratepayers association, and has a few questions for ministers responisible for the CPP Investment Board past and present. Erik Andersen and taking the CPP to account in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to keeps us current with views from our fair city's street. But first, Iain Boal and Pacifica's latest crisis of democracy.
