The Age of the Internet is no longer a new phenomena, but the wheels of justice grind slowly still, and what legal frameworks and regulations that will inevitably rise to control what is often referred to as the "wild west" environment of the current internet are yet to be finalized. This is true of both government oversight and the kinds of limits, checks, and premiums industry attempts to saddle the system with. One of the biggest battles now concerns so-called Net Neutrality and its nemesis, traffic throttling. How the fight between these two arcane terminologies plays out is going to make a huge difference in the way we all experience the internet in the coming years.
Christopher Parsons is a member of the New Transparency Project, exploring privacy and surveillance issues, and he's a PhD student at UVic's department of political science. He's written about attempts to introduce "enhanced" driving licenses that could include biometric and tracking technologies in Canada and is following the battle for the internet's future closely. Christopher Parsons in the first segment.
And; if you've been following Gorilla Radio over the last month you know, long-time friend of the show Jon Elmer is in the Palestine, reporting from the West Bank. Our first segment came from Egypt, where Jon's repeated attempts to enter prison camp Gaza were thwarted by Egyptian authorities. The next two installments came from Bethlehem, where I talked to Jon yesterday in the last of our series on life in Palestine. Jon Elmer from Occupied Palestine in the second half.
And; wayward publisher of the Victoria Street Newz and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will be at the bottom of the hour to bring us the news from Austin, Texas. The Gorilla Radio stalwart is on the homeward leg of her epic second trip with the Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba. If you recall last week's show, Janine spoke to us from a bus leaving the border town of McCallum, Texas where small minded, petty bureaucrats did their damnedest to humiliate Janine and her fellow internationals as they crossed into the U.S. from Mexico.
But first up, Christopher Parsons and following the donnybrook to determine Canada's internet future.
