This week on GR: educator, multi-award winning author, lecturer, and political activist Michael Parenti on North Korea and its "mad" leader Kim Jong-il; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster Janine Bandcroft and the newz from the streets of Victoria and preparing to go on the road to Cuba; and from British Columbia's Citizen's United to Save the Peace, Melody Blaney and the Peace River Valley, threatened by B.C. Hydro's plans for a Site C, mega-dam.

Despite the demise of a pop star over the weekend, or maybe because of it, the political world continued spinning events promising even larger portent to the lives of the planet's people than the passing of MJ. Believe it or not. The press says Iranian elections upset is as hot today as Friday; and, a military coup in Honduras has ALBA members mobilizing, and at least one report claims a threat of a counter-coup uttered by Venezuelan president Chavez against the rebels. As the less mentioned twin disasters in Iraq and Afghanistan grind towards larger eruptions, news of old time Axis of Terror pal, North Korea keeping the fires of its nuclear furnace burning bright in spite of "International" pressures against it, is making the middle pages. More on the Michael Jackson story later in the program...
But first, educator, multi-award-winning author, lecturer, and political activist Michael Parenti has received recognition from Project Censored, the Caucus for a New Poltical Science, the Social Science Research Council, and many other groups and organizations dedicated to peace and justice issues, and he's the recipient of the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition. Parenti has written 20 books, the latest of these being Contrary Notions: The Michael Parenti Reader, Democracy for the Few (in its 8th edition), and the forthcoming, God and His Demons. Michael Parenti and North Korea: “Sanity” at the Brink.
And; Victoria Street Newz publisher, and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour for the view from the streetz, her imminent departure for Cuba with the Pastors for Peace caravan, and "news" of her personal encounter with a teenage Michael Jackson.
And; listed as one of the province of British Columbia's most endangered rivers, the Peace River faces an even more ominous and immediate threats. B.C. Hydro plans for a Site C dam threatens the Peace River Valley, one of the north's most verdant agricultural and popular recreational pockets. Resistance to the mega-project is wide-spread among locals and is growing beyond the region and the country. Melody Blaney is with CUSP, the Citizens United to Save the Peace. She'll be with more on B.C. Hydro's not so modest proposal for the future end of the Peace River Valley in the second half.
And, I'll have more one the Michael Jackson investigation before the end of the show. But first, Michael Parenti and the "madness" of Korea's Kim Jong-il.
