This Week on GR
by C. L. Cook
This week: Raincoast Conservation's Executive Director, Chris Genovali on B.C.'s green prospects under Gordon the Brown; Michael O'Tuathail and the Harper regime's apparent turn away from a politically risky Canada-Colombia trade deal; and, Janine Bandcroft brings us up to speed with what's what on Victoria's streets.
Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca.
He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, www.pacificfreepress.com. Check out the GR blog at: http://GorillaRadioBlog.blogspot.com
In case it hasn't really sunk in: A record low turnout afforded the twice elected Premier Gordon Campbell a third majority in the British Columbia legislature on May 12th. Yes, we're in for another term of Campbell's tax and spend Liberals. As the economic order favoured by Mr. Campbell and his camp followers flails like a grounded seal in the Governor General's sights, there is no indication the government will waver now the neo-conservative, (or was it neo-Liberal?) agenda it swore faithfully to in 2001. In real terms, that means less for the needful citizen, a well-being tax; and, more spent from the public purse to sate an insatiable corporate appetite for the province's dwindling resources. Worse than this; it threatens to be the end of the world collapse of an, as yet, almost entirely unstudied ecosystem.
Big Oil, Big Bears, Big Forests, and a Small Sea with Chris Genovali of Raincoast Conservation in the first half.
And; the Harper government has backed down on its Bill C- 23, or so-named Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement. C-23 drew fire from human rights and labour organizations from throughout the Americas. A coalition of organizations celebrated the climb down, but in a joint statement, the groups: La Chiva Collective; Pueblos en Camino; and, the Mingas-FTA warned "the fight to defeat the CCFTA is not won."
Michèal Ó Tuathail is enganged in stopping the progress of the Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement. Michèal Ó Tuathail on dread Colombian-style in the second half.
And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to brings us up to speed with goings on on Victoria's streets; but first, Chris Genovali and whither B.C. after a third Campbell term?
