With the May 12th B.C. elections fast approaching, one of the pivotal issues is the so-called Run of Rivers scheme sprung on the province with little public notice or input. It has proven a divisive issue among some of B.C.'s environmental activists, prompting some to attack Carole James and the NDP for their proposed moritorium on the development of "Green Energy." But, how green is the Run of River? Damien Gillis is with the Save Our Rivers Society, a rag tag group of citizen activists rallying across British Columbia to make voters aware of just what they may engender should Gordon Campbell's Liberals have their way with B.C.'s rivers. Damien Gillis in the first half.
And; to many in Canada, the democratic process seems a farcical waste
of time and energy. Whether Liberal or Tory, the neo-liberal economic
and foreign policies proposed and enacted these last twenty years or so
are opposed and supported by both parties, depending which is in power
and which in opposition. Meanwhile, the wars grind on, Canadian
families and individuals see their living standard deteriorate, and now
the all knowing Market Economy, that entity all else must be sacrificed
for, is collapsing beneath the weight of its own corruption. What's a
poor citizen to make of it all? Elizabeth May is a long-time
environmental activist and lawyer who left the picket line to become
leader of the Green Party of Canada and fight from within the political
arena.
May has just released her seventh book, a recounting of her experiences these last two years of Ottawa and Canada's political system. Touted as a, "ringing manifesto for change" for Canada's democratic process, 'Losing Confidence' is a disturbing look at the profound failings of our constitutional democracy in the early years of the 21st century. Elizabeth May and losing confidence in Canada in the second half.
And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us news from Victoria's streets. but first, Damien gillis and saving our rivers.
G-Radio is dedicated to social justice, the environment, community, and
providing a forum for people and issues not covered in the corporate
