Cut Back for CBC, Bailouts for CanWest
by Friends of Canadian Broadcasting
In the past weeks, the Conservatives have: reduced CBC's budget by $63 million in their spending plan for the coming year – that's $75 million with inflation, decided that CBC will get no help to weather the recession amid reports that the government plans to bail out private broadcasters, and demanded that CBC fulfill its mandate knowing full well it lacks the resources to do so. "CBC is facing a $200 million shortfall. Unless we act today by building a grassroots movement of support, this could be the end of CBC as we know it." - FRIENDS of Canadian Broadcasting www.Friends.Ca
Bailouts for CanWest: "Harper has had at least one face-to-face meeting with CanWest CEO Leonard Asper..."
"The government is looking specifically at how to assist CanWest Global Communications, which is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy"
