Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Carmen Mills, Sandra Finley, Janine Bandcroft March 9, 2009
written by Chris Cook
This Week on Gorilla Radio
by C. L. Cook
This week: The biggest project you've hardly heard of is underway in Vancouver. Houses have been expropriated, and the bulldozers are moving in, but not everyone is willing to be rolled over by the massive Gateway Project. Carmen Mills is with Gateway Sucks, a coalition of environmental and housing activists determined to turn Gateway around; Sandra Finley is a Saskatchewan activist who refused to be counted by Canadian census contractor, Lockheed-Martin. The mega-weapons corporation is mining information on Canadians, all to be made available upon request to America's Homeland Security; publisher and broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft keeps us up to speed with Victoria's unaddressed shelter crisis.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca.  He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, www.pacificfreepress.com. Its opponents call it the most environmentally threatening mega-project in B.C. history, but what is the Gateway Project? Last week, residents of Vancouver's Bridgeview neighbourhood and their supporters took a stand, blockading bulldozer access to the last houses in the first residential area slated for demolition to make way for the Gateway SFPR connector highway. While Gordon Campbell and his B.C. Liberals say the highway will ease Vancouver's traffic congestion, protesters claim the highway is a cog in a master plan to create a continent-wide import corridor designed chiefly for heavy truck traffic transporting Asian goods bound primarily for the United States. Carmen Mills is with Gateway Sucks, a coalition of environmental and highway groups determined to reverse the Gateway project. Carmen Mills in the first half.

And; Canada's last census was contracted out to Lockheed Martin, the American weapons and technology colossus. Though they initially promised, vital statistics gathered would be held in the strictest confidence, Lockheed was later forced to admit they, and every company in the U.S., is bound under the PATRIOT Act to reveal all information requested by the Department of Homeland Security. Sandra Finley is a Saskatchewan activist who went public with her refusal to play along with the legally mandated census. Sandra and a few other high profile refuseniks stand charged by the government and face fines and possible jail time. Sandra Finley, standing up to not be counted in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and host of The Winds of Change program here at CFUV, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to keep us current with Victoria's ongoing shelter crisis; but first, Carmen Mills and putting the brakes on the Gateway Project.
