by C. L. Cook
This week: Nanaimo filmmaker Paul Manly asking, "What have you heard about the SPP?"; Victoria Street Newz publisher, Janine Bandcroft watching Victoria's shelter crisis; Salmon fisher, marine biologist, environmental defender, and author, Riki Ott on the long fight for justice in the wake of the Exxon Valdez disaster and the introduction of the 28th amendment to the constitution of the United States: the separation of corporation and state; and Victoria-based activist and writer, Zoe Blunt on this week's 'The Joy of Dissent and Speaking Truth to Power' event.
Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. Have you heard about the SPP? That's how Paul Manly opens his newly released film, 'You, Me, and the SPP.' The Nanaimo filmmaker, most famous for his revealing pictures of a Quebec Surete member acting as violent Agents Provocateur at a trade demonstration, turns his camera now on the little mentioned Security Prosperity Partnership, what it is and what its implenentation means for the future of its signing partners, Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America. Paul Manly in the first segment.
And; The frustration of justice during the long legal fight for the reclamation of Prince William Sound, irrevocably damaged by the Exxon corporation in 1989, and punishment for the many violations of the law and abrogation of responsibility on Exxon's part inspired Riki Ott to seek another avenue of redress for corporate malfeasance, the introduction of the 28th Amendment, the separation of corporation and state.
Ott is an Alaska fisher and marine biologist who by chance found herself at the centre of the largest environmental legal battle of the 20th Century; a battle that continues yet. Riki Ott on the betrayal and courage in the wake of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in the final segment.
And; It's been a year since scores of RCMP tactical officers stormed the Langford interchange tree-sit just outside Victoria. Three tree-sitters were busted for their efforts to protect an eco-system threatened by a highway overpass designed to suit the residents of the controversial Bear Mountain development. In remembrance of the protest, and a reminder that, though the battle was lost then, the war goes on, there will be a events later this week to mark what has been achieved, and what is yet to be accomplished.
Zoe Blunt is an Victoria-based activist, organizer, and writer, and she'll join us in the second segment to discuss what's next in Vancouver Island's land management debate
And; Victoria Street Newz publisher, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with Victoria's ongoing shelter crisis. But first; Paul Manly and 'You, Me, and the SPP.'
