This Week on Gorilla Radio
by C. L. Cook
This Week: Marine scientist, fisherma'am, and author, Riki Ott on the 28th Amendment, the separation of corporation and state in the United States of America, and her newly released book, Not One Drop; Will Horter of the Dogwood Initiative and the launch of the 'Tankers Are Loonie' campaign to maintain the oil tanker moratoria off British Columbia's coast; activist, broadcaster, and publisher, Janine Bandcroft covering the ongoing shelter crisis in Victoria and beyond.
Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, www.pacificfreepress.com. Check out the GR blog at: http://GorillaRadioBlog.blogspot.com
The old saw says, 'From tiny acorns, great oaks grow.' For Riki Ott that acorn was a gift of Rachel Carson's seminal environmental book, 'Silent Spring.' From that grew Ott's determination to emulate the Mother of North America's environmental movement, becoming a marine biologist, and working to make a difference. By chance, or design, her career path took her to Alaska, just in time to experience the Exxon Valdez spill disaster at Prince William Sound in March, 1989.
The frustration of justice during the long legal fight for the reclamation of the Sound and punishment for the many violations of the law and abrogation of responsibility on Exxon's part inspired Ott to seek another avenue of redress for corporate malfeasance, the introduction of the 28th Amendment, the separation of corporation and state.
Riki Ott's recently published book, 'Not One Drop: Betrayal, and Courage in the Wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill' is both an account of that dread event and the now two decades-long fight of the people effected by that social and environmental catastrophe, and a damning indictment of America's corporate culture of impunity. Riki Ott in the first segment.
And; Despite the obvious dangers oil tanker traffic poses to Vancouver Island and the inside passage, premier Gordon Campbell and his like-minded, pro-energy counterparts in the federal government would have the thirty-plus year moratoria against that traffic on our coast lifted. Already, condensate laden tankers have travelled up the Douglas Channel to Kitimat, a hub in the great Tar Sands projects of Northern Alberta; and, that traffic now threatens to expand.
Today, B.C.'s Dogwood Initiative is launching their 'Tankers Are Loonie' campaign to raise awareness of the dangers posed by the acceleration of industrial shipping in British Columbia's coastal waters. Will Horter is the Dogwood Initiative's Executive Director, and he'll be here in the second half.
And; Janine Bandcroft will join us to bring us up to speed with the latest outrage emanating Victoria's City Hall, where the so-called "progressive" new mayor and council have unanimously voted on a new challenge to the supreme court's ruling regarding the rights of the homeless to shelter themselves from the elements on public land.
But first, Riki Ott and drawing asunder the marriage of corporation and state in 21st Century America.
