Passing: Playwright/Anti-war Activist Harold Pinter
by C. L. Cook
Nobel laureate playwright, Harold Pinter died yesterday in his home in England. Pinter in recent years had devoted his entire energy to stopping the rampaging George W. Bush and his "democratic" allies war efforts across the globe.
Pinter had suffered throat cancer, and very nearly succumbed to the disease. His Nobel Prize acceptance speech was taped and delivered to Stockholm due his fragile health in 2005. Pinter survived his treatment then, but died Thursday. Of America, Pinter wrote:
"The crimes of the United States have been systematic,
constant, vicious, remorseless, but very few people have actually talked about
them [...] You have to hand it to America. It has exercised a quite
clinical manipulation of power worldwide while masquerading as a force for
universal good. It's a brilliant, even witty, highly successful act of
hypnosis."
