It took years after America's hurried exit from Vietnam for fiction to catch up with the reality of that war; but that was in the PI, or Pre-Internet world. Communications technology has, in 2007 little resemblance to those way back days, before PC's, iPods, homogenous corporate media and embedded journalists; so, it's little wonder novels, films, and other media are chronicling the debacle in the desert now, even as the battles rage on.

And why wait?

The Bush administration has touted its war as "generational" in nature; one could spend a life-time waiting for its end, before addressing the Global War on Terror. Anthony Lappe is a new-communications renaissance man; a television producer, radio personality, executive editor and co-creator of the internet's Guerrilla News Network, and a features writer for a score of magazines and newspapers, author of 'True Lies,' an eye-opening account of America in the post-Bush years, and the award-winning documentary film maker behind  BattleGround: 21 Days on the Empire’s Edge an expose of life in war ravished Iraq. His new book is 'Shooting War,' a fictional take on war correspondents informed by his real life experiences in Iraq.

And; there is another war; a war in the woods just minutes from Victoria. The forces arrayed are familiar to anyone who has lived in these parts, as are the issues. The south island is running out of space. Development is out-stripping the land available, and more people are moving to the island to enjoy its laid-back atmosphere. One of the city's major features, wild lands, rivers, forests and lakes within just a few kilometers of downtown, are now contested by developers eager to make a fortune, and citizens determined to stand between the trees and the bulldozers. Last Saturday, dozens of activists rallied at Langford's municipal hall. I went down to the demonstration to listen in.

Standing for the trees in the second half.

And; Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with all that's good to do in and around Victoria in the coming week.
