Now that two opposition parties - the New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Bloc Québécois - support a provision for asylum for U.S. war resisters, it’s time to put pressure on the opposition Liberals and the minority government of Stephen Harper to “Let them stay!â€
[Canada's third shoe dropped this week - the first two thundering wake-up calls to Canadians still imagining their nation a force for good: revelations of Canadian complicity, at the highest levels, in the on-going chamber of horrors masquerading as "correctional" centres in Afghanistan; and, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police graphically getting their man, a confused immigrant in this case, and tasering him to death before a shocked Vancouver airport audience. One of the witnesses filmed the entire incident, (if you haven't seen the state of Canadian justice, check out Youtube, where it's the most watched video in the world tonight.); now, the Supreme Court has turned away conscientious objector, Jeremy Hinzman, opening the way for his extradition to America to face desertion charges.
The growing war resister campaign plans to mount protests across the country to elicit public support.
Jeremy Hinzman was a U.S. soldier in the elite infantry division, the
82nd Airborne. He served in Afghanistan in a non-combat position after
having applied for conscientious objector status. After being refused
CO status and returning to America, he learned that they would be
deployed to Iraq.
Hinzman did not believe the stated reasons for the Iraq war. In
January 2004 he drove to Canada to seek asylum. He is currently living
in Toronto with his wife Nga Nguyen and son Liam. His refugee claim was
turned down in March 2005 by the Immigration and Refugee Board. This
decision was upheld by the Federal Court and the Federal Court of
Appeal. Jeremy is now seeking leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of
Canada.
