The CALAS, a
key player in the animal research industry, provides cover for abusive
treatment of animals in laboratories across Canada, including the University of
British Columbia, where more than 200,000 animals were used in research in 2010
alone. Naked protestor to be splayed out on dissection table, covered in blood, surrounded by animal “researchers”
WHAT: On Sunday, June 3, Stop UBC Animal Research will stage a visually disturbing, provocative protest at the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animals Science (CALAS) symposium at the Sheraton Wall Center Hotel in Vancouver, BC.
One protester - naked and covered only by a white sheet - will be restrained, splayed out on a large, vertically-erected dissection table, and splattered in blood. Additional protesters will be dressed as animal researchers, wearing bio-hazard suits and surgical masks. Other visuals will include signs that read: “Animal research breaks hearts,” “Imagine having your body left to science with you still in it,” “CALAS is callous to animals,” “Shame on Sheraton for Hosting Animal Cruelty.”
WHO: Stop UBC Animal Research

WHERE:
Sheraton Wall Center Hotel
1088 Burrard Street
Vancouver, BC V6Z 2R9
QUOTES: “The Canadian Association for Laboratory Animals Science aids and abets in the systematic abuse of animals in labs across the country. The Association essentially provides cover for the ghastly business of animal research,” said Brian Vincent, Director of Stop UBC Animal Research. “Instead of training workers to cut up animals, the Association should call for an immediate end to experimentation on animals.”
