Action alert: Island Timberlands is preparing to log big sections of
Cortes Island,
near Campbell River. Island residents have repelled these invaders
before, but this time it looks serious. For decades, corporations have
labeled the forests on Cortes Island "socially inoperable" because of
local opposition. Now the pressure is on.
The whole story is
here, and it's worth reading every word.
Residents just launched a
petition to protect the island's
wetlands and old growth forests, and ban clearcuts. Over 4500 people
have added their names. (Not bad for an island of 1000 people.)
Sign the petition!
Island Stance, a local environmental group, has scheduled legal
observer training for Saturday, January 14. Legal observers bear witness
at protests to document how people's rights are respected by police.
Sign up for legal training.
Wildstands, another local group, is asking people to come and bear witness. Cortes Island is gorgeous and very friendly. Visit
Wildstands for info. And stay tuned! More announcements are expected.

You may already know that Forest Action Network and Wild Coast get
no corporate or government funding. That's OK, because we have no paid
staff or offices either. 100% of our donations go to project expenses.
And we kick more ass (metaphorically speaking) than groups with big
budgets. For that, we thank our awesome supporters.
Let's go hard in 2012.
Thank you!
