written by Press Release
Trade Union Rights and Human Rights in Post-Earthquake Haiti: Public forum in Vancouver with Dukens Raphael, General Secretary of the Federation of Public and Private Sector Unions of Haiti
by Haiti Solidarity
Twenty one months following the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010, reconstruction in Haiti is still at an early stage. Close to one million people are living in survivor camps or have moved back into severely damaged homes. A cholera epidemic that broke out in October 2010 has killed more than 6,500 people and remains a deadly threat.

Increasing numbers of Haitians are calling for an orderly withdrawal from the country of the large, international police and military force of the UN Security Council known as MINUSTAH.

Dukens Raphael of the Federation of Public and Private Sector Workers of Haiti (CTSP) will report on the goals and principles that trade unions in Haiti believe should guide the relief and reconstruction effort. He is the Secretary General of the Conféderation des syndicats des secteurs public et privé en Haïti (CTSP). The CTSP has received generous and vital support from national unions in Canada, including CUPE and PSAC.

He is a guest to the national convention of CUPE
taking place this week in Vancouver.

Thursday, November 3, 7 pm
At the Empire Landmark Hotel, 1400 Robson St., Vancouver BC
Organized by: Haiti Solidarity BC. Endorsed by: International Solidarity Committee, Canadian Union of Public Employees, BC Division; UNITE-HERE Local 40.
