This Week on GR

This week: Marking Armistice Day in Victoria, I went down to the MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion memorial, tucked quietly
in the bushes beside the fountains, between the Legislature Buildings
and the Grand Pacific Hotel, there to stand with the stalwart,
white-poppy adorned peace proponents who speechify and personalize what
which war and peace mean to them.
And;Terry Glavin is an award-winning journalist, editor at Transmontanus
Books, a new columnist at the Ottawa Citizen, and he recently delivered
the Harvey Southam Fellowship lecture in journalism, 'Orwell and
Everything After' at the University of Victoria.
Friday marked another observance of the futility of war, and the determination of civilized nations to end forever the obscene waste of human life and potential, not to mention the ritual ravaging of our Earth and ecosystems the conduct of war demands.
That was the initial idea of Armistice Day, famously marked at the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
But the quaint notions of War no More, and Peace in Our Time has long been eclipsed by the martial pageantry and false patriotism celebrated over the bloody dead and maimed who served in one war after the next for what is yet to be made clear.

Voices from the other Armistice Day observance in the first half.
And; Canada's "Mission" in Afghanistan changed focus this Summer. After ten years of combat and garrison duty in that benighted nation, Canadian Forces will now be limiting their role to training Afghanistan's army and police.
The reduction of forces and redefinition of their duties is not welcome news to all in Canada.
Terry Glavi n is an award-winning journalist, editor at Transmontanus Books, a new columnist at the Ottawa Citizen, and he recently delivered the Harvey Southam Fellowship lecturer in journalism, 'Orwell and Everything After' at the University of Victoria.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us news from Victoria's streets and beyond. But first, remembering all the fallen on Armistice Day in Victoria.
