Security Meet Ends, Insecurity Does Not
Inter Press Service
Dahr Jamail and Ali al-Fadhily

BAGHDAD, Mar 12 (IPS) - The security conference held last Saturday in Baghdad produced statements, drew mortar fire, and brought little hope of security. The conference, which was attended by representatives from 13 countries including Syria, Iran and the United States, was held inside the heavily fortified "green zone" in central Baghdad.

Representatives from Iraq's six neighbouring countries (Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kuwait and Syria) and delegates from the five permanent UN Security Council countries (the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France) were present along with several Arab representatives.

Lilly's Legal Battle Over Zyprexa Documents Continues
by Evelyn Pringle

On January 3, 2007, a hearing was held before Judge Jack Weinstein in a US District Court in New York, on a motion by Eli Lilly to extend an injunction to conceal company documents that show Lilly hid the lethal side effects of Zyprexa for a decade and engaged in an illegal off-label marketing scheme to promote the drug for unapproved uses.

Zyprexa is only FDA approved to treat adults with conditions related to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and yet its Eli Lilly's number one best selling drug with sales of over $4 billion last year.

EVIL SPIRITS: BUSH IN LATIN AMERICA
by Jack Random

Spirit Guides of the Mayan community in Guatemala vowed to cleanse their sacred lands of evil spirits in the wake of the American president’s footsteps.

Said spokesperson Juan Tiney: “That a person like him, with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk [on] our sacred lands, is an offense [to] the Mayan people and their culture.” [1]

Folks often ask, rather cynically, where are the students protesting the war? Well, the answer is that they are there mdash; on their campuses and in the dorms mdash; organizing speakers, rallies and teach-ins. The fact that folks off campus do not hear about these events does not mean that they aren't occurring. What it does mean is that the media is choosing not to cover them.

Here in Asheville, NC, the local SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) linked group at University of North Carolina-Asheville (UNCA) organized a counter-recruitment protest in January 2006, a walkout and march against the war last October and is now actively involved in getting students to go to the March 17th March on the Pentagon.

War on Terror, War on Women
by Heather Wokusch

“On September 11, we saw clearly that evil exists in this world, and that it does not value life . . . Now we are engaged in a fight against evil and tyranny to preserve and protect life.”

-- Bush in 2002, linking abortion rights with terrorism, as he declared the 29th anniversary of Roe v. Wade to be “National Sanctity of Human Life Day.”

Under Bush, the US has become more militaristic and less tolerant of diplomacy and dissent. Women's rights have deteriorated accordingly.

He May Not Be Houdini, But...

by Jayne Lyn Stahl
He may not be Houdini, but how many smoking guns will it take to impeach this president? While it's downright decent of Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Robert Mueller to take responsibility for the fact that the FBI "broke the law," and "under-reported" to Congress the number of National Security Letters it used by, oh, a mere 20% (AP),there is one daunting, and unavoidable question here: who appointed the prominent San Francisco attorney to the helm of an increasingly unbiquitous governmental agency in the first place? Why, yes, it was the president who, back in 2001, decided upon Mueller to replace then beleaguered Louis Freeh.

But, will the problem be solved by having Mueller step down as Rumsfeld did? Who is at the helm? Is it Mueller? Isn't he just following orders? Wasn't Rumsfeld just following orders, too, or maybe refusing to get with the program?

I arrived at 800 Smithe St, Vancouver, the Supreme Court of BC at the designated hour of 8am on Monday, March 6th/07.
I was there to support the redoubtable Betty Krawczyk, British Columbia's most famous and beloved 78-year-old, non-violent, civil-disobedient ancient forest protection activist as she was sentenced to jail, once again, for standing firm against the wanton destruction of rare, ancient forest ecosystems.

Tomgram: Karen Greenberg, Gitmo Decorum by Tom Engelhardt

O nce upon a time, our offshore prison at Guantanamo was the sort of place where even an American National Guardsman, only pretending to be a recalcitrant prisoner "extracted" from a cell for training purposes, could be beaten almost senseless. This actually happened to 35 year-old "model soldier" Sean Baker, who had been in Gulf War I and signed on again immediately after the World Trade Center went down.

His unit was assigned to Guantanamo and he volunteered to be just such a "prisoner," donning the requisite orange uniform on January 24, 2003. As a result of his "extraction" and brutal beating, he was left experiencing regular epileptic-style seizures ten to twelve times a day. (And remember the Immediate Reaction Force team of MPs that seized him, on finally realizing that he wasn't a genuine prisoner, broke off their assault before finishing the job.)

A Bush Abroad: George Does America Latina
by C.L. Cook
Though little noticed, or made least note of in North America's press, those prison camps constructed across the United States, tendered to the tune of billions to Halliburton, are filling up fast; filling up with "illegal" aliens.

While most of the new concentration camp families held (they are imprisoning whole families: Mom, Pop, and the kids) are from south of the Rio Grande, some are from other offending nations; nations like Canada.

Erectile Dysfunction At A Glance: Erectile dysfunction is treatable in all age groups. viagra online uk viagra online What are vacuum devices? Mechanical vacuum devices cause an erection by creating a vacuum around the penis that draws blood into the penis, engorging it, and expanding it. One variation of the vacuum device involves a semi-rigid rubber sheath that is placed on the penis and remains there after attaining erection and during intercourse. Monitoring erections that occur during sleep (nocturnal penile tumescence) can help distinguish between erectile dysfunction of psychological and physical causes. A band is worn around the penis for two to three successive nights and it can signal intensity and duration of erections if they occur. If nocturnal erections do not occur, then the cause of erectile dysfunction is likely to be physical rather than psychological, however, tests of nocturnal erections are not completely reliable. Scientists have not standardized the tests and have not determined in whom they should be done. viagra and jokes viagra online viagra online canadian pharmacy viagra online viagra online ireland viagra online

On the outside looking in or on the inside looking out?
by William Bowles
Marx’s famous dictum that ‘The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it’[1], is never more appropriate than now. Yet in spite of the absolutely desperate state of the world, we seem to be even more removed from the political process than our ancestors were more than a century-and-a-half ago when Marx wrote it!

But before throwing up my hands in disgusted resignation with the human species, it’s worth asking the question why, after such a long period of uninterrupted struggle to change our world for the better, we find ourselves in this situation?
