Thsi Week on GR
by C. L. Cook
This week: Of BP and the Gulf oil disaster, This Can't Be Happening's Dave Lindorff writes; "Even as BP’s blown well a mile beneath the surface in the Gulf of Mexico continues to gush forth an estimated 70,000 barrels of oil a day into the sea, and the fragile wetlands along the Gulf begin to get coated with crude, which is also headed into the Gulf Stream for a trip past the Everglades and on up the East Coast, the company is demanding that Canada lift its tight rules for drilling in the icy Beaufort Sea portion of the Arctic Ocean."

Listen. Hear.

Dave Lindorff is a long-time journalist and author, who is described at his website, 'This Can't be Happening' as "a quixotic one-man effort to afflict the powerful." Dave Lindorff in the first half.

Home from a six-day ordeal that saw him in the middle of the now infamous raid against the Gaza freedom proponents, Kevin Neish on surviving Israel in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us from sunny Gabriola Island at the bottom of the hour where the annual National Campus and Community Radio Association confab began today. But first, Dave Lindorff on the audacious greed of BP screwing the planet's environment.

You would have to have been living in a cave deeper than the depths of the bottom of the sea not to be aware of the great environmental disaster unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico these last 44 days. So far, millions of gallons of crude has erupted from a sea bottom well drilled by British Petroleum's Deep Water Horizon oil rig. Offshore oil exploration and resourcde recovery is nothing new to Canadians, where the Hibernia oil field beneath the tumultuous North Atlantic, off the coast of Newfoundland, has been in operation for three decades. But what Canadians may be less aware of is the ambitions of British Petroleum and all the major oil companies to get their drills into the bottom of the icy Beaufort Sea in the far north.

There writes Dave Lindorff, "Even as BP’s blown well a mile beneath the surface in the Gulf of Mexico continues to gush forth an estimated 70,000 barrels of oil a day into the sea, and the fragile wetlands along the Gulf begin to get coated with crude, which is also headed into the Gulf Stream for a trip past the Everglades and on up the East Coast, the company is demanding that Canada lift its tight rules for drilling in the icy Beaufort Sea portion of the Arctic Ocean."

And; an enthusiastic crowd of supporters waited in Victoria International Airports austere Arrivals foyer Saturday night for the return of the local human rights hero. Strains of sixties protest anthem, 'We Shall Not be Overcome' greeted befuddled fellow passengers emerging the domestic flight from Toronto delivering Kevin Neish home from a six-day ordeal that saw him in the middle of the now infamous raid against the Gaza freedom proponents.

Kevin Neish and surviving Israel in the second half.
