Here Canada stands; following three elections in nearly four years, and three successive minority governments returned, there are rumblings coming from Ottawa of another non-confidence vote in the House of Commons. But this time, rumour has it, the oppostion parties will on the Governor-General to withhold the writ to dissolve the parliament and beg she and the queen instead recognize a Liberal-led coalition government.
Despite Conservative party propaganda to the contrary, a coalition government would be neither "unprecedented" in Canada, nor is it "undemocratic" under our parliamentary system.
Mel Hurtig is a Canadian author, entrepreneur, publisher of Canada's first and only encyclopedia, and the founder of Canada's now-defunct National Party. He is the recipient of the Order of Canada and the Lester B. Pearson Man of the Year Peace Award, and was named 'Edmontonian of the Century.'
Some of Mel Hurtig's many book titles include: the best-seller, 'The Betrayal of Canada,' 'Rushing to Armageddon,' 'Pay the Rent or Feed the Kids,' 'The Vanishing Country: Is It Too Late to Save Canada?' and his 1996 autobiography, 'At Twilight in the Country: Memoirs of a Canadian Nationalist.' His latest book is 'The Truth about Canada: Some Important, Some Astonishing, and Some Truly Appalling Things All Canadians Should Know About Our Country.'
